Once again farmers are back on the roads of Delhi in 2024 demanding minimum prices for their produce (crops).

The protest began on February 12, 2024 (Tuesday) from Punjab’s Fategarh Sahib. Delhi Police have made proper security arrangements and imposed Section 144 in the National Capital. The entry of large vehicles including trucks and trollies is prohibited.
This is the second phase of protest by Sanyukt Kisaan Morcha after the first phase in 2020-21 organised against unfavourable agriculture laws and norms. At that time thousands of farmers died due to harsh weather conditions and COVID-19.
The protest of 2021 came to an end after an agreement between the farmers and the government in which the government agreed to some demands of farmers and the withdrawal of police case against protestors. Farmers are saying that they have organised protests once again as the government didn’t follow their promises.
What are farmers demanding now in their Delhi protest?
- Farmers want the government to complete the promise they made at the time of the 2021 protest. They are asking to waive off their loans along with the sanctioning of pensions.
- They are asking for strict action against people who are selling fake seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and other agricultural products.
- They want the government to double the number of days from 100 to 200 under the employment guarantee scheme.
- They also want freedom from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and to abolish all trade agreements
Police dropped tear gas canisters on farmers who were protesting. Multiple points have been sealed by the cops to prevent the entry of farmers. The government has imposed Section 144. Large gatherings have been prohibited and internet services are affected due to the protest. According to farmers, the government has promised to make a committee to address their concerns but no action has been taken.
During these protests, Congress has promised farmers to fulfil their demands if they would vote for them in upcoming elections.
